Forklift operators are needed in almost any industry that has something big to move. They will move materials around warehouses, storage yards, factories, construction sites, or other worksites. Operating a forklift may simply look like fun, but a forklift is a very important, powerful piece of heavy equipment (that can be fun too). Employers need operators that possess safety awareness, have some technical and math abilities, and are reliable. Does that describe you and your interests?

Forklift operators generally move materials over short distances such as around construction sites, factories, or warehouses. Some move materials on and off of trucks, trains, and ships. Operators need to be familiar with the equipment they are using, and are responsible for the safe movement of their cargo.

What This Career Could Mean For You

Employment in material moving occupations is projected to increase by 6 percent between 2014-26. A relatively high number of job openings are created by the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations or retire. You could be working inside or out, on a variety of different forklift types.

Operators in Maryland can earn up to about $35,000. Wages in these jobs can vary according to experience, job locations or responsibilities, and even the types materials being moved.
