.The new Heavy Equipment Operations Certificate program ran for the first time at Harford Community College this spring. Students from Susquehanna Workforce Network, as well as open enrollment students, are completing a series of four core classes covering site work, grading, soils, safety, and basic maintenance. Students will then specialize in specific pieces of equipment, such as loaders or excavators, to complete their certification. Additional certifications can be earned on additional equipment. Instructor John Alexander, an employee of Alban/CAT, brings more than 30 years of heavy equipment experience to the program.

Employment of construction equipment operators is projected to grow 10% until 2024. Infrastructure spending should generate many new jobs for construction equipment operators. Workers who can operate multiple types of equipment should have the best job opportunities. The average earnings in Maryland for 2016 were about $48,730 per year.
