Dr. Dianna G. Phillips, President of Harford Community College, presented the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award to David and Diane Dixon at the College’s Commencement ceremony on May 24. Recipients of this award must attain outstanding success in their chosen profession, demonstrate a commitment to the community, and maintain an interest in and service to Harford Community College.

“We very much appreciate the honor,” said Diane Dixon. “We are humbled that what we thought to be our day-to-day routines should become so honored by the College.”

For more than 50 years, David and Diane helped grow Dixie Construction Co. from a small, summer paving company to one of the top site preparation contractors in the mid-Atlantic region. Today the company employs more than 300 people.

The Dixons, who raised their five children in Harford County, have demonstrated their commitment to giving back to the community. They know the importance of obtaining a good education and have a long history of partnering with the College in support of scholarships and programming.

“It has been a privilege to work with David and Diane. Their support of the College and the community is tremendous, and they have truly made a positive impact on the lives of many,” said Denise Dregier, director for College and Alumni Development.

Their generous support of Harford Community College extends across campus, but they have a personal connection to STEM programming. To honor Diane’s parents (her mother was a nurse and her father a doctor), they named a lecture hall in Aberdeen Hall, the hub for the College’s STEM programming. These funds established the Margaret S. Horky Nursing Scholarship, an annual scholarship for an HCC nursing student to purchase required program supplies. They also recently provided funding to purchase anatomy models for students in anatomy and physiology to use for individual study.

In 2012, they named the Dixie Construction Fitness Center in the Susquehanna Center. This gift made it possible for the College to purchase state-of-the-art fitness equipment, in addition to providing resources for Harford Community College Foundation programs and scholarships.

David and Diane have both also given generously of their time. They have served on the Harford Community College Foundation Board of Directors since 2008.

In addition, they support numerous organizations in the county and beyond including the Harford County Public Library, SARC, Special Olympics Maryland, Humane Society of Harford County, Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake, the Boy Scouts of America, and numerous Harford County recreation councils and volunteer fire organizations.
