HCC recognizes that students at a community college typically encounter a great deal of stress during their academic experience. Although many students cope successfully with the academic demands, for some the pressures can become overwhelming and unmanageable. Students may experience stress as they attempt to balance academic, social, work, and family obligations. To help our students, HCC offers two free College-sponsored benefits: On-Site Counseling (available fall and spring semesters and winter session) and the Student Assistance Program (available year-round).

On-Site Counseling offers confidential, on-site, short term counseling for enrolled credit students to address emotional, behavioral, relationship, substance use, and anger management issues. The On-Site Counselor, Pat Watson, L.C.S.W.-C, from Associated Mental Health Specialists, is available on campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., from September through May when the College is in session. Her office is located in Room 104 of the Student Center.

The Student Assistance Program, offered by Behavior Health Services, provides in-the-moment support to help students navigate the everyday challenges that can interfere with the ability to learn and thrive. Care Coordinators, who are master's-level clinicians, will confidentially assess the student’s problem, assist with any emergencies and connect the student to resources. The Care Coordinator then becomes the student’s personal point of contact. If appropriate, the Student Assistance Program can provide telephonic, video and face-to-face sessions with a counselor. Students also have access to an online resource library with information about preparing for college, student success, student health and safety, after college, relationships, financial literacy, health, resilience, legal forms, personal growth, emotional well-being and more, as well as access to health videos and webinars.
