Harford Community College was awarded a NACAS Foundation 2020 Campus Care Grant in the amount of $7,850 to support its Food Pantry for students. The grant will help create a larger storage space outfitted with shelving, a refrigerator and freezer, and fund the installation of a door to make the area more accessible to students.

Food insecurity, hunger and financial instability negatively impact students’ grades and persistence, reducing their ability to perform well in their studies and potentially leading to the decision to stop attending classes or drop out of college entirely.

Since the inception of HCC's Food Pantry in March 2019, there have been 952 visits. Through this grant, students will have access to more nutritious fresh foods, such as meat and produce, in addition to the nonperishable items that are currently available through the pantry. Dr. Griselda Flores and Laura Burke of the Office of Student Life worked with Coordinator for Grants Brandy Naughton to secure the grant.
