Harford Community College Announces 2021 Phi Theta Kappa All-Maryland Academic Team

Two Harford Community College students, Jareen Chowdhury and Shreeyam Mishra, have been named first and second 2021 Phi Theta Kappa All-Maryland Academic Team members, respectively. Both students were recognized during the annual All-Maryland Community College Recognition Ceremony, held virtually this year on May 12, 2021.
The Maryland All-State Academic Team Recognition Awards Program was introduced in 1995 to recognize Maryland community college students for their scholastic achievements and leadership.
Students who are nominated for the All-USA Community College Academic Team are automatically placed on the All-Maryland Academic Team.
“Congratulations to both Jareen and Shreeyam on being recognized as Harford Community College’s 2021 Phi Theta Kappa All-Maryland Academic Team members!” said Dr. Theresa B. Felder, president of Harford Community College. “They are both exceptional students and we are all very proud of their accomplishments. I am confident that they will both excel in their future studies and we wish them the best of luck.”
Each year, two students from community colleges across the state are nominated by their college presidents and Phi Theta Kappa advisors to the All-USA Academic Teams. Students are recognized by the Maryland Council of Community College Presidents and the Maryland Association of Community Colleges. The All-USA Academic Team program is annually presented by Phi Theta Kappa and USA TODAY, and is presented by Follett Higher Education.
Shreeyam currently serves as the Executive Vice President of the Rho Beta Chapter and Jareen is the Vice President of Scholarship.
“I’ve had the pleasure of watching these remarkable young women grow and achieve during their time at Harford Community College, both academically and personally, and it is with great pride that I witness this extraordinary achievement,” PTK Advisor and Assistant Professor of Arts and Humanities Jennifer K. Jacobs said.
Jareen Chowdhury grew up in Bangladesh and moved back and forth to the United States until she settled down in Maryland after high school. Currently a business administration major, she enjoys being challenged academically, and is interested in economics and how current world events affect the world’s financial standing. Jareen plans to attend the University of Maryland, College Park and major in marketing management, and then work toward earning a master’s degree. Volunteer work is also important to Jareen; her previous experience includes working in schools as a teaching assistant and raising money for refugees by selling art.
Shreeyam Mishra was born and raised in India and moved to the United States in 2019 to pursue a career in nursing. She is double majoring in nursing and computer science and is dually enrolled at Harford Community College and Towson University. In her spare time, Shreeyam volunteers for the local crisis hotline. Her career goal is to work in nurse informatics after earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree.
