Adult Literacy classes increase both employability and self-confidence. Harford provides a supportive environment that allows you to brush up on basic learning skills and prepare for the GED® exam.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) Classes

These classes are FREE and meet mornings OR evenings two times a week for nine weeks and provide both individual and group instruction. The class covers:

  • Reading skills for the beginning reader
  • Basic math skills
  • Skills for everyday living

PreGED® Classes

These classes cover intermediate math, science, social studies, reading, and writing skills. Students must have qualifying scores on assessments and are required to purchase books and class materials.

GED® Test Preparation Classes

Harford Community College's GED® Test Prep classes review skills needed to sit for the GED® exam and earn a Maryland high school diploma. Classes meet once a week for nine weeks, are offered in the mornings OR evenings, and cover advanced math, science, social studies, reading, and writing, computer, and test-taking skills

Eligible students must have qualifying scores on assessments. Tuition, fees, and books for GED® Preparation are the responsibility of the student. Classes are eligible for VA education benefits and scholarships, senior adult and disabled retiree tuition waivers are available.

Once you complete the GED® Test Preparation classes, schedule a time to sit for the computerized GED® exam at Harford Community College's Pearson Vue Test Center, located in Edgewood Hall.

The classes weren’t as hard as I thought they were going to be. The teachers I had were awesome. It really helps if you want to be here. I was able to get a scholarship to help pay for my GED® classes. I am grateful for everything.

[Adult Basic Education] helped me open my mind to be willing to risk being in school again. My self-esteem has increased and I really don’t stress out about school anymore. I have the courage to apply myself and learn things I couldn't learn before. I now believe I can really achieve anything I put my mind to.
