Harford Community College Students Complete CNA Certification

Seven Harford Community College students received their certificate of completion and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) pins from Instructor Susan Smith at a small ceremony held in Darlington Hall on May 17. Each graduate was allowed to bring one guest to the event.

Smith received praise for her outstanding support as students completed their program during the pandemic. Normally students complete their clinical off campus, but this year they completed the 66-hour requirement in the CNA lab on the College campus. Students were required to complete 100 hours of theory and skills in addition to the 66 hours of clinical over a 12-week period.

According to Sherry Massoni, Assistant Dean, Continuing Education & Training at Harford Community College, Instructor Susan Smith was exceptional. “My daughter, Beth Arbaugh, has learning disabilities; however, Susan worked hard to address different learning modes in her instruction which proved to be exceptional. At a time when Harford County needs individuals willing to take on these low paid, needed positions, it is outstanding that we can provide a well-educated workforce.”

Several of the students in the program received the Governor's Emergency Education Relief (GEER) scholarship. Governor Hogan provided $10 million of Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) funds to Maryland’s community colleges to provide workforce development courses and continuing professional education that lead to government or industry-required certification or licensure, especially to those who lost jobs due to the COVID19 pandemic. Harford Community College was one of the colleges that received such funding.
