Harford Community College Celebrates GIS Day

17 October 2023

Harford Recognizes How Geographic Information System Technology Makes an Impact

Harford Community College will celebrate GIS Day on November 15 from 11 AM to 2 PM in Darlington Hall, Room 202. The College will join hundreds of organizations worldwide in recognizing the impactful work of GIS professionals, innovative applications of geographic information system (GIS) technology in analysis, visualization, gaining insights into geospatial data, and thought leadership in the field of Geospatial Technology.

This is Harford's first year participating in this event and the public is invited to join us. Vendors, drone demos, and presentations on what Geospatial Technology is and what it is used for in business, industry, communities and government will be featured.

More than 20 years ago, Jack Dangermond, founder and president of Esri, envisioned people collaborating and sharing how GIS affects everyone. That led to the establishment of GIS Day, which was first observed in 1999. The explosion of geospatial technology since then has expanded that idea into a global event that shows how geography and real-world applications of GIS are making a difference in business, government and society. It's a chance for organizations to share their accomplishments and inspire others to discover and use GIS.

Harford Community College began offering an Associate of Applied Science degree in Geospatial Technology (GST) in fall 2020 and a certificate in GST in fall 2022. The GST program was awarded a National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education grant in the amount $427, 181 to implement their “Map Your Success: Enhancing Pathways in Geospatial Technology Through Community Partnerships” project.

Tamara Biegas, Assistant Professor of Geography at Harford Community College, stated, “GIS Day is a day to showcase how GIS professionals and students utilize GIS and Geospatial Technologies to create a positive impact on the world. GIS helps us design real-world applications, make data-informed decisions, and tells us stories about our data.”
