Harford Community College Library Named FDLP Depository Library of the Year

21 October 2024

Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) Library of the YearHarford Community College Library in Bel Air, MD has been named the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) Library of the Year by the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO). HCC Library is celebrating 57 years as an FDLP library of government information.

The HCC Library was designated as a selective Federal Depository Library in June 1967 – when the College was only 10 years old – thanks to the efforts of then-Congressman Clarence D. Long. Congressman Long sought this designation for the HCC Library because he saw a need for closer access to government information due to the rapid growth in population resulting from the U.S. government installations at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Bainbridge Naval Training Center, and Edgewood Arsenal and from the overall expansion of industry in the area.  HCC Library is 1 of 53 selective federal depositories in the region of Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia all covered by the regional depository library at McKeldin Library at the University of Maryland College Park. The HCC Library is one of only two community college libraries designated as Federal Depository Libraries within this region of Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia.

Lois Entner, Director, Library, Harford Community College, stated, “It is a true honor for the Harford Community College Library to be named as FDLP Library of the Year. This award is a testament to the dedication and passion of not only our current Library staff, but those who have worked throughout the past 57 years that the Library has been a part of the FDLP program. I am proud of the hard work our staff puts in every day for our community, and grateful they are being recognized in such a special way.”

The College celebrated its 50th anniversary as a Federal Depository Library in 2017. As part of the anniversary program, The Honorable Davita Vance-Cooks, then the Director of the U.S. Government Publishing Office, presented a golden anniversary award to Harford to recognize the Library’s 50-year commitment to providing the public with access to Federal Government information.
