New Exhibit to Open in Hays-Heighe House

14 January 2025

Trials & Triumphs: A History of the African American Experience in Harford County, a traveling exhibition, will be on display in the Hays-Heighe House at Harford Community College from January 16 to February 7. An opening reception will be held on January 16 from 11 AM to 3 PM. Refreshments will be served. A coordinator talk will start at 11:30 AM.

This traveling exhibition offers a rich tapestry of voices and experiences—both painful and proud—woven into the fabric of our collective Harford heritage.

Read a letter written by enslaved Annie Davis to President Lincoln, march with Sgt. Alfred B. Hilton across a field of battle, ride with Sonny Thornton in a daring horse race, and sing with Nella Dodds to a classic pop hit.

See documents, textiles, and objects donated by members of our community just for this exhibit. Then join us online to share your own stories and photos in our virtual galleries as we continue to trace, tell, and celebrate this history together.

The Hays-Heighe House is open Tuesdays, 1-3 PM; Thursdays, 3-5 PM; and Fridays, 10 AM-12 PM.

The traveling exhibition was developed by the Historical Society of Harford County, Inc. and Hosanna School Museum with generous support from the Harford County Government via an African American Heritage Grant. It will travel around Harford County through July 2025. Learn more here.
